Accommodating up to 12 guests in six luxurious staterooms, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> was built for Tom Perkins, and marked the first instance of a superyacht using a Dyna Rig design, developed in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra</a>. Emma Becque sits down with Captain Scott Waterfield of the 45m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3667" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serendipity I45.0m (147'8&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Serendipity I</a> to find out his entrance to the sector, his top travel tips and why he thinks the yacht is the perfect adventure platform for a world tour.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/299147/image/large-548dc77d0e952446438ec2468a3f43d0.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/299147">How did you get into the yachting industry? &nbsp;My parents bought a boat when I was born so I’ve been on the ocean since day one. As a kid it was sailing dinghies, then in my teens competitive windsurfing and bought my first keel boat when I was 19. So you could say I've been yachting all my life. I didn’t start professional yachting until I was 40 when my former shore based life no longer suited me and I was open to a new journey in life. It wasn’t until I sold my business in NZ that I started to think about what kind of new life I wanted to experience. I knew it wasn’t in an office, it wasn’t even in a big city. It was definitely related to the ocean and people. With a background in sailing and hospitality, transitioning into super yachting was a natural progression. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260182/image/large-c8b34481029722ea657eb2d421a05d21.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260182">Were there any hurdles on this journey and, if so, would you mind describing them? &nbsp;Because of my background in sailing, hospitality and also business management my progress up the ranks has been relatively straight forward. I’ve found myself mostly on global roaming programmes so the biggest challenge has been maintaining personal connections and having a stable shore based community. I have many friends that run the traditional Med/Caribbean programme and maintain a home base in Palma for example, because they are there every change of season. But when you are constantly on the move you find that your personal connections are wide, but not deep. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/299153/image/large-a35753d2890cc0af41ed18034caf8afd.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/299153">What do you think it takes to succeed in your position?&nbsp;Firstly you need resilience - both mentally and physically. It’s a demanding industry especially when you run a global touring programme. Long passages, followed by long periods of owner use, then smashing out short yard periods in order to get through to the next region before cyclone season etc. It takes its toll. So taking time out to restore and revitalise is critical otherwise you burn out. I’m still learning this skill!! <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260175/image/large-d8519483002830ac13469ed73139566d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260175"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260177/image/large-45334714ed6821e06b48964a77cbcaa5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260177">Secondly you need a good crew and the right skills to manage an ever changing environment that involves long hours, close quarters living, often different nationalities and wildly diverse personalities. Crew turnover is most often a direct result of poor leadership on board. With crew turnover you have knowledge loss and the programme will never reach optimum performance. So good leadership is vital to developing a stable on-going programme. I’ve been very fortunate to have been able to build great teams and worked with some amazing people – many of whom have become life-long friends after our work relationship has ended.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260181/image/large-cd6f17219fdfc8279fa4da2ccde7ab27.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260181">What is the most inspiring aspect of your job?&nbsp;For me it's about the people. Firstly - I love building teams and helping other people grow, develop and excel in their respective roles – but also while having fun and enjoying life. As an outdoor guide, as a skipper, as a business owner, I could only succeed based on the people around me. So for me it's important to build the right culture on board and support the crew to be the best they can be. From that basis we all succeed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260170/image/large-dd91a4869837fb85a2c5ec3a2a140ab5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260170">Secondly – I get great satisfaction from having owners and guests experience a magical part of the world that many people never get to experience - the ocean. I’ve had my previous life on land and found adventure and peace at sea as a cruising yachtsman.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260169/image/large-64ae3b69736390f999f842e20aa4733f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260169">Most guests are busy, high performance people who struggle to turn off. So I really enjoy introducing them to the freedom of the ocean and creating experiences that allow them to step back for a moment and connect with nature and the ocean and fully immerse into the different cultures of the foreign lands we may visit.How and why did you choose to become the Captain of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3667" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serendipity I45.0m (147'8&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Serendipity I</a>? &nbsp;Initially I was asked to join the boat as relief Captain but it turned out that the position was going to be full time. After talking with the owners extensively I felt they were the kind of people that I want &nbsp;to build a long term relationship with. They wanted a professionally run commercial vessel but with a relaxed family orientated style for people who have an interest in water sports and adventure.&nbsp;They have a long term desire to see the world by boat and make that available to a select group of charter clients who hold the same values. I had already worked with two of the crew on board and the First Officer had been onboard for 18 months and there was another Kiwi, so I knew it would be an easy transition. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/182571/image/large-2e4754437b1f064fd75dd5f591302166.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/182571">How does&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3667" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serendipity I45.0m (147'8&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Serendipity I</a>’s arrangement maximise the onboard guest experience? &nbsp;The boat has a great layout for both sailing and entertaining. The large covered aft deck area provides a fantastic place for relaxing and dining. It's well protected from sun and wind but yet still outside, but with the saloon doors open you have a massive indoor/outdoor living space. We can set up bean bags on the foredeck under the sunshade. And then you’ve got the flybridge area with both seating and a massive daybed – again with the option of a sunshade. So you’ve got various areas around where you can gather but also have space away from others. The large transom is &nbsp;great for setting up water sports gear and sending people off for windsurfing, kitesurfing and e-foiling. Which all get used a lot! There’s even a Mo-Jet surfboard, Seabob and dive gear. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/299143/image/large-87aeb5a257f34dba5eb428a8a984924b.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/299143">What are some of the yacht's&nbsp;most standout features?&nbsp;Firstly I have to say – the crew! We’ve got a standout team. We are a diverse group of people from all around the world – New Zealand, South Africa, North Macedonia and Peru. We have a male chef and a female First Officer. Ranging in age from 22 to 52. You couldn’t get more diversity. I think &nbsp;part of that diversity is what brings us together and balances us as a really cohesive team. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/299150/image/large-6272e16dc52e8880983fe8d5fea02e3a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/299150">As for the boat itself – actually the whole package. Some people give Perinis a hard time for being big heavy boats. But the 45-metres sloop actually sails really well. We need about 15 knots apparent wind to get her going but I’ve been surprised how well we sail – and that comes from someone used to sailing carbon 30 metre yachts and my own high performance catamaran. So the real benefit is the extensive guest space and liveability combined with comfortable sailing performance.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260172/image/large-74d0ba22e6b173b820a71a3a5c80651f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260172"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260171/image/large-ea3af3b0dcb99d8ff6c8f7a39fcb3376.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260171">Where has been your favourite destination to travel to as a captain?&nbsp;Oh – that’s a hard one. I’ve been very fortunate to have chosen off-the-beaten-path programmes that have taken me to amazing places like the Amazon Delta, Easter Island and the New Zealand sub Antarctic Islands. So it's difficult to choose a favourite. They are all special but for different reasons. But I can say I’ve spent a lot of time in French Polynesia and keep my own boat there. It’s a large cruising ground with distinctly different geography between the different island groups. It's got great sailing, surfing and kite surfing, a unique culture blending the Polynesian and French influence. But as a sailor you can also feel the ‘mana’ of the place as being the centre of Pacific voyagers that &nbsp;transited between Hawaii, Easter island and New Zealand. Saying that, I’m very excited to cruise Alaska and Patagonia over the next few years as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3667" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serendipity I45.0m (147'8&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Serendipity</a> starts its world tour and shares those amazing locations with guests who want an off-the-beaten path experience. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260179/image/large-92a9579d133e6ab43c64ca6f492c0a04.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260179">Do you have any secret travel tips for yacht enthusiasts?&nbsp;Being really blunt - if you want to be seen to be seen, like having your favourite foods on tap, want perfect internet access 24/7 to stream Netflix and be able to get your Amazon packages sent overnight by DHL then the Med/Caribbean are perfect. If you’re open to a little adventure, keen to experience different cultures and eat locally available foods and want to experience true ‘island &nbsp;time’ then the Pacific is for you. If you want a true sailing experience make sure you choose a boat &nbsp;where the crew have a passion for sailing themselves. And choose locations that have wind at the &nbsp;right time of year. Summer in St Tropez is not a place for a boat like us – but we’ve had an awesome season here in Greece. We’ve had thousands of miles of good sailing nearly every day zig-zagging across the entire Greece archipelago stopping at remote anchorages, kiting and windsurfing in AntiParos but also spending a little time partying in Mykonos! <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260173/image/large-22d534339ebbb37d2404c786435aa705.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260173"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260180/image/large-93b07a0ceb1a9194652d62bcbaf65dce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260180">Do you have a message or piece of advice for others who may feel inspired to follow in your path? &nbsp;The biggest thing is to consider any role in this industry as a ‘profession’ not just a bum job. For many that join the industry it's just a gap year or something to do while because they’re not doing anything else. But for those that take it seriously it can be a very rewarding career. That means regularly investing in personal development and doing courses, developing good work ethics and showing a real interest in becoming a professional sailor. Adam Sutton, Sales and Purchase Consultant at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/136" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Independence (Company)">Ocean Independence</a>, discovered his early passion for sailing during his time in the scouts. His professional journey reflects a diverse background, transitioning from selling industrial equipment in Sheffield to joining a superyacht crew. He ascended from the role of a deckhand to Chief Officer, simultaneously serving as a second engineer along the way. During ocean crossings, he dedicates time to teach navigation skills and willingly imparts his knowledge to anyone with questions.&nbsp;Simon's also actively contributes to the broader yachting community. An example of his commitment to developing talent is his effort to engage with the RYA chairwoman. This encompasses considerations from living accommodations to practical storage solutions, including provisions for flatware, service storage, and the overall design of the galley.The impact of an unhappy crew is well-known – high turnover not only incurs increased costs but also poses a potential detriment to the owner's overall enjoyment of the vessel. Serving as a second engineer has provided me with a robust background in electronics, IT, and engineering.&nbsp;This technical expertise extends beyond the comfort aspects of a yacht; it's about understanding the intricate technicalities. This engineering focus is crucial because it allows me to better interpret an owner's desires. It's amusing to reflect on my previous experience working on catamarans, like Necker Belle, back when they were not as mainstream. Now, we're witnessing an increasing presence of catamarans in the market. Incidents involving the malicious throwing of hardware paint on superyachts have rendered them vulnerable, compelling owners to be concerned about the security of their vessels even within supposedly secure marinas. Consequently, the urgency to adopt greener alternatives has gained significant traction.Finally, personally, if you could invest in a yacht, what would you choose and why?If I were to invest in a yacht, my preferences would vary for different reasons. Renovation work is set to continue further with the renewal of the facility’s interiors. From class-approved propellers to fully printed hulls, 3D printing is on the rise. We take a look at the opportunities for yachtbuilders and ask whether the industry is more confined by mindset than technology.From model-making to printing food or even replacement organs, it seems there is nothing 3D printing cannot do. The use of additive manufacturing, as it is also known, is already viable across a range of industries for the production of plastic, metal and ceramic elements. And earlier this year we learned of 88-metre Pegasus, a concept by designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jozeph Forakis (Company)">Jozeph Forakis</a> touted as “the world’s first 3D printed superyacht”. But is this emerging technology the miracle solution that will enable us to print entire boats in a matter of days?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295550/image/large-2e977725d308de0c51d4f283798ac61c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295550">“When we started out, we looked at how we could introduce this technology in a field where everything is strictly artisanal,” says Paolo Nazzaro, co-founder and MD of Superfici, an Italian additive manufacturer based in La Spezia.“ The shipyards reacted like it was arcane magic, and it took time to prove to them that we could use new technology to improve design and functionality.”With clients ranging from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5753" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sacs Marine (Company)">SACS</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1440" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heinen & Hopman (Company)">Heinen &amp; Hopman</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Raymarine UK Ltd (Company)">Raymarine</a> to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, Amer, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Tankoa</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini</a> and even Lamborghini, the message is starting to get through, although the challenge now is convincing shipyards to change the way they approach design. Nazzaro points to a tender helm console Superfici designed and printed for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5753" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sacs Marine (Company)">SACS</a>, which was an exercise to show that when you change the way you build parts you also change the way you design them.&nbsp;“Now they understand,” he says. “We design not only the exterior but also the internal parts because we print everything as one; it means parts are becoming more complex even though they are actually easier to build, and shipyards are starting to change the way they conceive projects.”“It’s a different mindset,” agrees Adam Wheeler, Design Office Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker International</a>. “Rather than just designing for manufacture, we can design for form now. The beauty of 3D printing is it lends itself to free thinking. There are no limitations.”&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> has started using 3D printing across its range and has set up an internal programme known as RAMP (Research into Additive Manufacturing Processes). Currently its 60-strong design office uses 3D printing primarily for components in non-visible areas, but the tech allows the team to create complex pieces that are not possible to manufacture by conventional injection moulding, such as parts for plumbing or air-conditioning ducts that can maximise available volume, or elements like plenum boxes and manifolds that by printing them whole mitigates the risk of leaks through human error.&nbsp;“We can develop and realise organic shapes that subtractive manufacturing doesn’t allow us to do,” Wheeler confirms. “It’s definitely the future and we’ve got high aspirations as to how we utilise additive manufacturing going forward, although the print resolution isn’t quite there yet to print a major moulding without having to revisit it with paint or other finishing.”For Will Penfold, Senior Project Manager at 3D printing company AMufacture in the UK, designers and shipyards are still playing catch-up with the technology. “A lot of the time parts come to us that have been designed for injection moulding or machining and are not designed with 3D printers in mind,” he says. “We then advise how they can tweak the design and add value or features, because we can print parts that can’t be made in any other way.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295551/image/large-73b02ba3b3b53862aafcc41a6b980e6d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295551">AMufacture prints custom components for high-end race boats, and low-volume production parts for sailboats, motoryachts and luxury tenders. A supplier to companies like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Harken Inc. (Company)">Harken</a>, it announced at the start of 2023 that it was the new 3D printing technical partner for SailGP.&nbsp;“Over the past six months we’ve had a lot of conversations with a lot of different marine companies, not only in the UK but also in Europe,” Penfold says. “It suggests that the technology is on the verge of becoming mainstream in the marine sector.”Print tech&nbsp;There are a bewildering number of 3D printing technologies. Not all are suitable for finished parts or the marine environment, and others may be promising for future adoption but right now are very expensive. The key methods currently include:Fused deposition modelling (FDM): A method of material extrusion, this is perhaps the best-known 3D printing technology in which a print head lays down extruded layers of melted plastic filament, concrete or other materials. It is used in most hobbyist 3D printers.Vat polymerisation: In this method, light is used to selectively cure a photopolymer resin in a vat to create a complex solid shape. Stereolithography (SLA) is perhaps the best-known process, but there are many variants based on differing light sources and proprietary processes.Powder bed fusion: In a way, this is a more advanced version of FDM whereby a thermal energy source is used to fuse powder particles (thermoplastic, metals or ceramics) to build a solid object layer by layer. Selective laser sintering (SLS) and multi-jet fusion (MJF) are two example technologies. Parts produced using these methods tend to have excellent mechanical properties and can have complex geometries.Material jetting: Material jetting works in a similar way to a standard inkjet printer, but instead of ink uses photopolymers which are sprayed in layers and then cured with UV light.Binder jetting: This process is similar to SLS but uses binder droplets rather than heat to fuse power particles. It is a low-cost process for functional metal parts, although mechanical properties do not match those of powder bed fusion parts.Direct energy deposition (DED): An electron beam, laser or plasma is used to feed and fuse material simultaneously when it is deposited. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) used to create the RAMLAB/<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6617" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Shipyards (Company)">Damen</a> propeller is a form of DED. The tech is expensive and parts require surface finishing, but it can be used for high-end components in automotive, aerospace etc, making it one to watch for superyachts in the future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295557/image/large-d45a2e168c0ce486d13f9c90f6eb01e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295557">Are we there yet?While the possibilities for 3D printing are immense, there are still some barriers to its widespread adoption in yacht construction. The WAAMpeller project by RAMLAB in Rotterdam showed the potential of additive manufacturing when it successfully printed a ship propeller in nickel alloy, aluminium and bronze that was subsequently class-approved by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1463" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bureau Veritas (Company)">Bureau Veritas</a>. However, the propeller required additional finishing, and the cost of such printing technologies is still prohibitively high for small-scale production.There is also the problem of size with most printers currently offering print scales of up to around one cubic metre, and the rapidly changing nature of the technology means it is a hard call for a yard to invest in a serious printer – one reason why third-party print companies will likely continue to provide off-site parts manufacture even as the technology matures.“The interesting thing is in metal 3D printing, which is still a bit boutique and expensive,” says Penfold. “But as new technologies come online, that’s getting cheaper and there are a lot of fabricated parts that suddenly you’re going to be able to print.”The result is more design freedom, which promises to provide savings in both cost and weight – advances that are probably only two to three years away. Similarly, the issue of size is being overcome not by larger print beds, but by designing in junctions that allow for component elements to be bonded together.&nbsp;“In FDM printing you can build bigger with print beds up to 12 metres long, but the quality is not great,” says Penfold. “The print technology that we use, which is MJF [see sidebar], can create parts that are 100 percent homogenous and equally strong in every axis. As the technology matures and metal printing gets cheaper, I think that will be a big thing for the marine industry.”Spares on demandIt is not just ease of manufacturing that 3D printing offers; it also opens up opportunities for spare parts on demand or, in the case of older models or obsolete parts, one-off replacements via laser scanning, modelling and printing.&nbsp;The idea of a yacht carrying its own 3D printer and printing off plastic and metal parts on demand is also tantalising, and this prospect was further bolstered in 2017 when Rotterdam-based RAMLAB partnered with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6617" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Shipyards (Company)">Damen</a>, Promarin, Autodesk and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1463" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bureau Veritas (Company)">Bureau Veritas</a> to 3D print a class-approved, 1.35-metre diameter ship propeller. The reality, however, is that such steps are likely many years away not least because of cost, space and the need for parts to be finished post-printing.&nbsp;“I don’t think we’re all going to have 3D printers on our yachts,” says Will Penfold, “but I think instead of having ten parts on a shelf somewhere gathering dust, companies will have a design on a server and when someone needs a part it will just be printed off and three days later it will be on board, rather than having to go through the longer process of conventional fabrication. We’re already in discussions along those lines.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295552/image/large-76d0e6721af67d976ea6a576c5c10514.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295552">A future blueprint&nbsp;Despite the challenges, 3D printing allows for complex geometries, custom designs and limited production runs, all of which are pertinent to the low-volume, high-quality nature of yacht building. Another relevant advantage is that the materials used are fully recyclable and reusable, which means an end-of-life solution for parts and tooling, waste reduction for prototyping, and the evolution of parts on the fly without having to create new moulds.So does this mean that we will soon be cruising in printed yachts that have come off a production line in a matter of days? This prospect was mooted in 2019 when the University of Maine printed a 7.62-metre open boat that broke three world records in 3D printing. But while you can now 3D-print houses, and 3D-printed boats are being made in the Netherlands for use on calm canals, it is unlikely we will get to this point in mainstream yachting.“The way the University of Maine boat is printed means it can float, but it would crack if you tried to navigate with it in waves,” says Nazzaro. “The other problem is weight [it came in at 2.2 tons].”&nbsp;Instead, Nazzaro believes the future is more likely in 3D printing moulds, which can then be used to build boats. AMufacture’s CEO and co-founder Craig Pyser agrees that printing tooling will become more widespread, but in tandem with CNC machines. Clearly, we are on the verge of more widespread adoption of 3D print tech in yacht construction, and that opens up some delicious prospects in terms of design and efficiency.&nbsp;“Someone said to me in my early days in this field that with 3D printing, complexity is free,” says Pyser. “When I fully understood what that meant it was an incredible moment, because it means clients are only limited by their imagination. Is 3D printing reshaping the yachting industry?

Since reestablishing the shipyard and opening its doors in June 2022, the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">Amsterdam Yacht Service (AYS)</a> has been bursting with refit projects. First opened in 1921, the shipyard in the Noordzee canal of Amsterdam’s NDSM port, is steeped in maritime history and the team are able to offer superyacht owners a unique combination of Dutch-pedigree expertise and innovative technology. This year the yard has turned its expertise to a number of complex projects, as well as expanding its facilities, and we took a closer look at a number of works recently completed at the yard. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294924/image/large-13e5f8017a619407af231c62dc00b564.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294924">An iconic 56m&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a>&nbsp;sailing yacht refitOne of the most ambitious refit projects so far undergone by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">Amsterdam Yacht Service</a>, the refit of an iconic 56-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> sailing yacht is due to be completed in the coming weeks. Coordinated in close collaboration with the yacht’s experienced owner, the refit has demonstrated the breadth and depth of the A<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">YS</a>’ skill. The team also completed works to restore the yacht’s teak decks, as well as the sail winches and they repaired and refitted her windlass.Robert Binnekade, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">AYS</a> Director, commented; “As the owner informed us that he intends to sail the yacht extensively, we were keen to ensure that we brought her technically up to speed once again, ready for sailing regattas. As <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> no longer exists as a yard, there was an extra challenge for us as a shipyard to ensure that all of the vessel’s technology was working perfectly: from her engines to her shaft alignment and onboard systems. This was a challenge which we rose to, and we are so proud of the results!”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294923/image/large-9357b72f4efee779db06e63d78d489e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294923">Due to the length of the vessel the shipyard was required to demolish part of its shed and add a temporary extension, with the superyacht being transported in and out of the shed by means of a SPMT (Self Propelled Motor Trolly). Since the delivery of the yacht to her owner, the temporary extension has been removed, however new doors have been added in its place with a 12 metre opening, allowing for the accommodation of larger projects in the future. The shed has also benefited from a number of improvements, including an upgraded lighting system, a full repaint and a new fire suppression system.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294921/image/large-48a7e895b6744142a02e3839fc565de6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294921">Bespoke approach in the refit of 26m Arrabida&nbsp;The aluminium schooner Arrabida was successfully redelivered to her owner earlier this year following an extensive and highly bespoke refit. The yacht received a major paint job on her topsides which required the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">AYS</a> team to remove all the stainless steel fittings and the many water stays found on this kind of boat. They also implemented a comprehensive galvanic isolation programme to separate the electrical systems and avoid direct current flow. We designed and installed the bushings and plates to ensure the aluminium and stainless steel were kept well apart and avoid any oxidation in the future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294930/image/large-1449de4964377c9ba097dc832d5f8cee.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294930">Other aspects of the refit included various repairs on the deck and the wooden cleats which had been subject to storm damage. One of the hydraulic power-packs was also replaced and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">AYS</a> were tasked with a complete overhaul of her propeller and the related shaft, tunnel and variable pitch controls. Wear patterns on the tunnel showed that it was misaligned by some eight millimetres, an unusual find that meant the team had to cut out the original shaft tunnel and replace it with a new aluminium section. A new propeller shaft tunnel was then drilled, this time with the precise alignment required.Robert Binnekade explained, “As well as demanding the flexibility to adapt to complex changing requirements, this kind of challenge requires a great deal of knowledge and technical prowess. We successfully completed everything in-house leveraging on our yard’s experience not only with yachts but also with the demanding propeller installations required on the canal boats of Amsterdam. Arrabida’s refit is a fine example of the way the team works together to complex an advanced custom refit project, that was carefully aligned with the owner and which was completed with complete transparency in terms of costs.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294922/image/large-e528bb315f032c15a97b84bc5ce226fa.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294922">Other recent works&nbsp;Previously known as Commercial Break, the 28-metre Moonen motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trooper27.43m (89'12&quot;)Moonen Yachts2003">Trooper</a> arrived in Amsterdam in November 2022 following her sale. Hauled out ahead of her inspection and undergoing an underwater paint repair, the yacht received a full hydro-jet of her new underwater hull, and a full paint job of her superstructure and top sides, restoring her back to her former glory. We disassembled and reassembled all of her hatches, doors, railings, tables and more, alongside refreshing her masts with all of the antennae and associated navigation equipment, repairing her teak deck, cleaning her propellers and replacing her water seal.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294929/image/large-a00a9c7a55488f4668d860b9b81934c1.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294929">One of the largest yachts to undergo works at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">Amsterdam Yacht Service</a>, the historic converted superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1098" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sherakhan69.65m (228'6&quot;)Scheepswerf A.Vuyk & Zonen1966">Sherakhan</a> underwent a number of complex in-water maintenance works. When new owners acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> early in 2022, they channelled their vision into a technical refit at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/895" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lusben Shipyard (Company)">Lusben</a> in Livorno. The best way to bring the iconic yacht up to date and protect her legacy well into the future was to assemble as many of the contractors involved in the original project as possible.When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> launched the mighty <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> in 2006, she represented not only the culmination of extraordinary ingenuity and vision on the part of her pioneering owner, the late Tom Perkins, but also a long list of subcontractors and suppliers. Her ground-breaking Dynarig had been pulled from design theory and engineered into existence on what would quickly become one of the most-photographed yachts in the world. But the development of her rig and sail plan introduced other technical challenges, from the unstayed rotating masts to the unique furlers and associated monitoring systems. Her place in the limelight is well deserved, but with that comes a certain pressure to maintain her iconic status.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272536/image/large-ae1f5fd33237b177737c568c13aa0ad2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272536">Fast forward to 7th April 2022, when new owners took possession of the 88-metre yacht in the eastern Mediterranean. Neither they nor their captain, Pierfrancesco Cafaro, were strangers to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a>, having owned and sailed the 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/543" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="La Luna52.0m (170'7&quot;)Perini Navi1997">La Luna</a> around the world. But <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> is a very different animal. It took 12 years for someone to build a second Dynarig yacht, and by the time <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a> was taking shape many of the technologies had evolved. This presented <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a>’s new owners with a dilemma.“The previous owner had essentially left much of the yacht as she was in 2006,” says Captain Cafaro. “In September 2022 we decided to come to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/895" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lusben Shipyard (Company)">Lusben</a> yard in Livorno, which had a suitable dry dock available, and we set out a huge plan to refit her – although we reduced that a little in order to save the summer 2023 season. Why <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/895" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lusben Shipyard (Company)">Lusben</a>? Because it looks easy but it’s very specialist work and a mistake can stop the boat. I wanted it done by a big shipyard like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> who can give us a warranty.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272540/image/large-f50ae6bd879c381d01b3db2bff696427.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272540">Remade in ItalyThe nature of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> means that most of her core equipment and control systems are completely custom, and refitting her in Italy rather than in her homeports of Malta or Palma meant that all the expertise that went into the original build was on the doorstep. Most of the contractors had heavy work schedules, but by staying local the team maximised the chances for the works to be completed in time for the 2023 Med season. The process started with the decision to strip the hull back to bare metal.&nbsp;“It wasn’t anything that the previous owners had done wrong, it’s just that the paint was 15 years old and the yacht has done a lot of sailing,” says Cafaro. “Also at close to 90 metres, there is some movement in the hull and that had clearly taken its toll on the filler.” It was also a chance to change the colour of the hull; gone is the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Falcon</a>’s original black paint scheme and in its place is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini</a> blue.On deck, there have been alterations and additions to the guest areas. The addition of a fixed bimini, for example, now offers weather protection and shade for the aft deck dining table. Made by Massimo Forti of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4308" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FM Architettura (Company)">F.M.</a> Srl and stretching from the superstructure to the mizzen mast, it creates an area that when the saloon doors are fully open offers 50 metres of protected indoor/outdoor living (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4308" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FM Architettura (Company)">F.M.</a> was also responsible for the class-certified welding and hotworks for the new exhaust system where it meets the hull).There have been some changes inside too, with much of the dark gloss and stainless steel décor replaced with warmer hues and softer touches, all under the watchful eye of Roman studio Emanuela Esposito. The artwork has been changed to reflect a Japanese influence, and the guest areas, cabins, VIP and master have all been overhauled. The guest bathrooms have been gutted and refitted with pale marble and less masculine palettes, and the deckheads have been replaced with new leather.&nbsp;The crew quarters have also received a makeover with a new wooden floor, new Miele appliances for the laundry, and new lower crew and upper guest pantries, as well as a completely new main galley installed by commercial specialists CS Refrigeration. All the tanks have been de-rusted and painted, the bilges painted and the sensors replaced.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294408/image/large-47a6848dcc558e357a84ce2b72205db9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294408">Technical treatmentThe real focus and biggest challenge of the refit, however, has been a multi-million-euro technical overhaul. Due to the extent of the works and the complexities of the systems needed to control, drive and monitor the Dynarig which presented the biggest challenges for the team, the choice of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/895" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lusben Shipyard (Company)">Lusben</a> and the decision to use the contractors involved in the original build proved a wise decision.Ascheo was brought back in to service all the motors and hydraulics that control the rotation of the masts (see sidebar). The owner’s team considered switching to electric drives as on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a>, but electric motors were too big for the existing space so they had no choice but to work with the original system. Fabbri Fiore was also brought back to overhaul and update the unique Dynarig furlers, winches and deck hardware, while Cacini &amp; C – another of the original build contractors – returned to update the sail control system and the yacht’s monitoring system (see sidebar).“Since the very beginning, the Maltese Falcon project has been an amazing challenge for all suppliers that has exerted a magic charm on all the companies participating in her construction,” says Angelo Cacini. “The opportunity to work again on this vessel rekindled these feelings, and the captain – working side by side, day by day with the workers onboard – transferred the new owners’ intention to make the Maltese Falcon greater than ever.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272549/image/large-04b8f076cb63199cc0d053576f952c95.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272549">Tiers before bedtimeFor the mechanical upgrades the team turned to 2gtech, yet another of the original build team, to replace the three generators with modern, more efficient and more appropriately sized Lindenberg-Anlagen 270kW gensets based on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1441" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MAN (Company)">MAN</a> engines, and to overhaul the original <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Deutz AG (Company)">Deutz</a>-MWM main engines. A urea tank and SCR exhaust treatment system has been added alongside a new exhaust system and silencers. Meanwhile Manrico Francesconi Srl in Viareggio , who was also involved in the original project, replaced all the fan coils in the air-con system and made some improvements to the compressors.&nbsp;Similarly, all the bridge PLCs and navigation electronics have been updated or replaced by Caim and the entire yacht rewired to replace the old halogen lights with warm-Kelvin LEDs – a huge upgrade that will have a positive impact on power draw and heat generation.&nbsp;After flirting with Kymeta flat panels for satcomms a few years ago, these have been removed and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> has gone full Starlink, even removing the traditional TV antennas. The yacht also has a new fire-suppression system.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272554/image/large-757c00f1d4ff1d027fc06b35f28d2feb.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272554">Digging deepAs with most refits, the team frequently came across more than they bargained for when digging deep into systems: “Sometimes we decided to do some works and we opened things up and found the situation was critical because it hadn’t been looked at for many years,” Cafaro says. “For example, when we were overhauling the mechanical and shaft elements, we realised the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2207" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rolls-Royce Marine (Company)">Rolls-Royce</a> systems that usually have to be serviced every five years hadn’t been done for 10 years. It not only added to the budget, but facing these kinds of problems – which we found in more than one department – has taken up a lot of time and energy.”The result is a refreshed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> that will stay relevant into the future as environmental responsibility takes centre stage. “We could have spent half of what we did, but sustainability was a very important consideration for the owners – the boat had to be updated for the next 10 years,” says Cafaro. “Can you imagine using the gensets from the original build in 2032? You would be arrested as soon as you turned them on! And even if you weren’t, you would be out of the charter market because people are increasingly mindful of what’s going on. That goes for the crew too. So the focus was on safe sailing first, then doing it without damaging the environment.”What is clear from the love and attention (and money) that has been invested in the refit of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a>, is that the sailing yacht is still able to capture the imagination and stir the emotions 15 years after her launch. Just as important, the experience and expertise that went into building her is as valuable today as it was then.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294421/image/large-1af108451a4fcbb2af83c14452f96cf8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294421">Automation &amp; monitoringCacini &amp; C was involved in the original <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> project for implementing the sailing control and monitoring system. The company was responsible for designing the software, building the hardware, installed and commissioning it on-site in Tuzla, Turkey. Cacini’s main task was to design, build and install a new ship automation and monitoring system. The project comprises eight new automation panels, the integration of three new diesel generators, and the replacement of all sensors throughout the yacht.“One of the hardest challenges was to install the new wiring,” says Angelo Cacini, the company’s chairman.“This required laying more than 15 kilometres of cables, basically across the whole boat.” &nbsp;A second team worked to refit and, on occasion, to redesign some of the yacht’s core services ranging from the compressed air system to 24-volt distribution, the urea system and the rebuilding of lighting in several technical zones including the engine room. &nbsp;“This refit is a big upgrade for the whole boat,” says Cacini. “A lot of the elements have been replaced with up-to-date systems in an overall modernisation of the yacht with significant improvements in terms of increased features and reliability.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272550/image/large-4ea24c385d484d1a69789c4b1f4d07e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272550">Pool cool Part of the original plan for the winter 2022-23 refit was the addition of a swimming pool on the bridge deck aft in the area that serves as a terrace for the VIP cabin. The 10-square-metre pool with a capacity of 10,000 litres, presented a challenge for the design and engineering teams, as well as for the schedule of the refit works as in order to be signed off, it would have to to be emptied within three minutes. This would normally mean installing a large pump in the engine room, which is fine on a new-build, but problematic for a refit. The solution that was agreed upon was that the pool could drain to the main deck below.“Procedure means all the documents and designs have to be approved by ABS, but they were taking too much time and without that authorisation you can’t start building,” says Cafaro. “They told us they should be able to give authorisation by January 2023, but we didn’t trust that timeline so we decided to postpone those works.”The paperwork has now been completed, and the plan is for Lusben to begin construction of the pool module ready for installation in a brief follow-up refit period between the end of September and early November 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;“They are all contractors that I know well, but they are all so full of work that it can be hard for them to give a firm completion date,” says Cafaro. “If they tell us the pool needs more time, we won’t do it this Autumn because we have to be in the Caribbean at the end of the year. But if they can do it, then we can start the Caribbean season with another big new feature.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272544/image/large-132ad960e42b9a75d0ba30f4d2c2f72e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272544">Keeping the rig runningThe overhauling of the Dynarig was left to Ascheo, who developed and installed the original system. The team was tasked with servicing the rescue crane and helm wing stations, and the hydraulic mast rotation units (indeed, Ascheo’s team now includes the original designer of the MRU system). Aside from replacing worn-out components, the team was also able to update the MRU hydraulic supply system, leading to a 50 per cent reduction in noise.It wasn’t all plain sailing, however: “We faced the challenge of insufficient information about previous troubles and maintenance coupled with limited time and space on board, also due to other refit work that was happening on the yacht,” says Ascheo president Guglielmo Lorenzoni. “All three systems had never been built before, and coming back on board meant we could observe and evaluate their condition after 18 years of operation. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> is certainly one of the most prestigious constructions in yachting and the refit keeps her abreast of the times, as well as improving the liveability on board with the noise reduction.”Lorenzoni’s advice for such a complex technical refit is simple: “Proactively coordinate so all agencies are informed and ready to service the boat before it docks,” he asserts. “Remember that new technologies could offer opportunities for energy saving. During the refit process the superyacht was transported in and out of the shed by a self propelled motor trolly.Following <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Panthalassea56.0m (183'9&quot;)Perini Navi2010">Panthalassea</a>’s delivery to her owner, the temporary extension on the shed was removed. The Italian Sea Group reports 25% revenue increase on 2022

The Italian Sea Group has reviewed and officially approved the financial results for the first nine months of 2023.

There’s a great romance to slowing down, catching the wind and cruising in near silence, without the use of an engine, surrounded by friends and family. <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a> sat down with Mark van Gelderen of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TWW Yachts (Company)">TWW Yachts</a>, who shares his insights on the sailing yacht market today and gives his view of the ideal size in the market. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/275500/image/large-958ecb4848e27732f4a4e76dc2cbbbaf.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/275500">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/865" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Carinthia VII97.2m (318'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2002">Corinthia</a>-style yachts used in Regattas are certainly in vogue but they’re full-blooded performers,” said Mark van Gelderen. “For a first-time buyer, they may offer a bit too much, giving the impression that sailing yachts are solely designed for speed and endurance – which isn’t necessarily the case.”When walking among the tall masts at any boat show, it's common for performance to be wrongly emphasised as the main talking point. Okay. For some, maybe not. But for many, yes. Sailing is accessible to everyone, and buyers can be as involved in the sailing as they desire - We shouldn’t forget that.So if you’re interested yet intimidated by sailing yachts, don’t be. They can be enjoyed just as much by first-time owners as they can by seasoned sailors. Knowing which one to buy is important though.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/273498/image/large-a507fd333a816a9c6309904ef2b556ec.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/273498">It’s all dependent on individual usage, but a rule of thumb for a sailing yacht is to look at the 30 to 40-metre category. “The sweet spot,” Mark confirmed. And understandably then, there aren’t too many on the market. Out of the nearly 600 yachts built, approximately 80 are currently on the market, with only six being constructed in the past 10 years. Those that take ownership, keep it that way.“A sailing yacht between 30 to 40-metres is ideal for every type of buyer: it can be crewed by as few as two; typically it has a functional general arrangement and accommodation for eight to 10 guests; are able to make crossings and can quite literally sail around the world, safely and comfortably; and is a good size for an owner who’d like to be involved in the sailing and operations.”There are numerous builders worldwide capable of delivering exceptional yachts of this size. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a> builds high-quality and freshly designed sailing yachts in South Africa at a good price. In Scandinavia, Baltic Yachts stands out as a builder that champions innovation and constructs some of the most high-tech sailing yachts available. While in Europe, there’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> and the reformed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> – all fantastic builders in their own right.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208211/image/large-17ad81c13b82960f9850ebc854a5479e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208211">“If you want to go smaller, multihulls up to 27.5-metres are a strong alternative – fantastic day boats and good for island hopping or cruising the Mediterranean or high speed performance sailing,” said Mark. “They can also be crewed by two and they have deck space large enough to host parties for as many as 20 people.
